That Job Really Blew
As of late, it seems like a lot of people have hopped on the Andy Warhol bandwagon. While I do enjoy many of his quotes that I have seen, I must admit that "Blow Job" was a severe let down. While the title was relevant, the work certainly did not reach the expectations that I had imagined for the piece. It was too long, too monotonous and too plain. I appreciate the idea behind the work, but it really wasn't necessary to drag it out for thirty minutes. On the other hand, I can say that I appreciated Jack Smith's "Flaming Creatures." It pushes viewers out of their comfort zones, and that's what I like about it. This film explores the idea of sexuality, and portrays it in a new light. I think it was a good contrast from our previous screening of Brakhage’s works. In this piece, Smith explores the brutality behind sex in a way that almost rejoices in man kind’s innate desire for pleasure. The revelers in the film satisfy themselves without restraint, and it is this lack of control that shocks audiences. As for the last piece, I was unimpressed. Despite Dr. Langston’s talk of the movie, “Nostalgia” was a struggle for me to get through.
