Meshes in the Afternoon (A Reflection)
Upon my first reaction of viewing "Meshes in the Afternoon", I disliked the film. However, after reading the article and discussing the film in class, I had a much deeper appreciation for it. Moreover, I disagree with the flower a symbol for her "virginity" or "fertility." The idea is much too far fetched. I had never quite encountered a film like this that celebrates the different experiences that occur when one dreams. The scene in which Maya Deren swoops back the white sheets is a particularly vivid scene to me. Maya effortlessly appears fazed and in bewilderment of her surroundings. It is quite interesting that she is both the director and star in the film. To know that Maya could express herself so poignantly to the audience is a commendable endeavor. In this film, she effectively illuminates the ability of the subconscious to produce various recollections of a simple memory. Oddly enough, there was, once again, a certain familiarity associated with the film. It was as if I were watching a de ja vu of myself dreaming. "Meshes in the Afternoon" was a film that eventually grew on me. There is no doubt that "Meshes in the Afternoon" has earned a place in my "inner movie shelf." The film did not disappoint me.
