Maya Deren is brilliant!
I absolutely loved all three of her films because of how random they were, yet they each had their own mesmerizing flow. Meshes of the Afternoon was such an interesting dream world to get caught up in. As a spectator watching Maya’s life, I felt as if I had some authority over what was going on but I couldn’t do anything about it. I could see he afternoon ending tragically but I couldn’t warn her. Something about the film just gave me this feeling that I was helpless and that in life there are things that are inevitable, can’t be avoided for the life of you and it frustrated me, but it also gave me a sense of ease because even though you can’t control the overall outcome, you can control how you choose to spend your afternoons!
I also enjoyed Maya’s film A Study in Choreography for Camera because of how beautiful the dancers moved throughout the 4 min. film. I envied their effortless motions because the dancers exuded this sense of freedom like no other. They were inspiring, enlightening, captivating, motivating, and all together beautiful! Maya Deren’s style and ability of filming is very admirable; I thoroughly enjoyed her films.
