I cannot decide how I feel about the film Rose Hobart. I am not sure whether to praise Joseph Cornell for his creativity with the splicing of scenes or to criticize him for stealing footage from another artist. I believe it would be extremely interesting to research Rose Hobart’s response to this film. Though it is creepy, we discussed in class today how it really did advance her career a great deal from the B list films she had already made. Was she flattered or creeped out? And also is it an insult that one of her fans could do more for her level of fame than she could on her own with merely her acting abilities… or lack thereof. The film also left me curious as to the plot of her original movie and whether Cornell sought to convey anything to his audience beyond mere obsession. If you think about it though, I am sure there are many similar videos on youtube today. People make slideshows stealing pictures and clips of actors all the time. Magazines will post huge pictures of celebrities on their cover to entice the reader to buy it and find out more. Is that not the same level of obsession we see in Cornell’s movie?
