I really didn't get the films we watched last Thursday initially. I appreciated Breer's films after I read the Manifesto and his interview for class on Tuesday, but after reading Brakhage... sorry, I still don't get it.
Breer's use of animation is really interesting to watch on screen, especially the constantly moving lines in A Man and His Dog Out for Air. It's really interesting that he just decided to create the title as the entire scenario, just to get a response from the audience when they started to interpret the crazy moving images. Yes, we eventually see the Man and His Dog at the end, but it feels really playful rather than high artsy.
For Brakhage, I see how his style is important. Anticipation of the Night is really gorgeous in cinematography and editing techniques. It's interesting that he stripped sound away from film and just letting the images speak for itself, but his films felt endless. I wanted some kind of reveal from the article we had to read, but I didn't get much insight from it.
