buying breer

The first time that I watched Breer's films I thought okay, another artsy, crazy montage of images that has no real significance to me. However, after discussing it in class, I found it enthralling how Breer employed the technique of collage to contain a message. In both of his films, I felt as though he had a hidden message that was meshed into a collage to create a nice, playful overtone that kept the films enjoyable. His editing techniques were the first that I have seen that I thought mattered: by splicing the long shots amongst the short cuts he created a true vision in the eye of the viewer. He made the viewer see what he wanted the viewer to see and notice what he wanted the viewer to notice. I found this enthralling because before I had percieved avant-garde as a symbiotic relationship. Breer redefined this relationship along the lines of influencing the viewer and focusing attention on certain aspects of his films.
