Out of the films we watched last thursday, the film that struck me the most was A Trip to the moon. I, personally, have never been a huge fan of science fiction or any type of horror movie but I really appreciated the increased level of creativity and planning that must have had to go into such an early film. The film makers could not merely go back and edit with all of the new programs we have today. They would have had to re shoot the entire scene.
The film makers had to be creative in that there were some parts of the film they could not show and merely had to imply had happened. With no green screens to use, showing a rocket traveling through space is much more difficult. The movie really made me think about how our special effects may make movies more exciting, but at the same time they really are not necessary to develop a good, substantial film. The actors dressed as aliens in masks and tights proved to be just as effective enemies as a digitally constructed enemy we might see in a scientific fiction movie today. While I still enjoy the thrill and excitement all of our modern editing provides, I maintain a strong appreciation for the more simplistic films as well.
