Did anyone else notice that there is alot of focus placed on Francis throughout the movie? It was subtle, but there were little things in different scenes that I noticed that may or may not be hints from the director at Francis' "guilt." For example, there is one repeated scene with darkly lit stairs and a sliver of light illuminates the path on the stairs which Francis walks on. There is another scene in which Francis is in the center of the asylum (although the frame is off center) with the white and black paint on the floor in which the white paths lead toward the different doorways in a circle around him.
I took this to mean that the director was trying to stylistically isolate Francis in his own world.
