In watching the film "A Voyage to the Moon," my first thoughts were of how silly and unrealistic it seemed. After a bit more thought though, I realized that this film really was innovative, unprecedented, and amazing for it's time. It's easy to dismiss the flm as unrealistic and primitive in its concepts of what the moon is like-gooey, with underground caves, giant mushrooms, and moon men who are hostile towards earth-dwellers-but that's only because we know what the moon is really like. On July 21, 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon, putting to rest many of the worlds questions about what this mysterious lunar rock was like; but before that the moon was a mysterious alien land to us. We must give Melies some credit for coming up with the idea for this film over a century ago. Even with all of its seemingly crazy ideas, some of his basic concepts were pretty accurate, especially for having little to know knowledge of the moon. It is always fun to look back on movies like this and say oh, how silly that was, or even look back on styles from the 1960's and wonder what our parents were thinking; but before we cast too much judgement on them, we must keep in mind that someday our children and grandchildren will be looking back at our music and styles and movies and be wondering the exact same things.
