The Illusory Craft of Film

I was immediately intrigued by the introduction of the Nekes documentary, Film Before Film (aka What Really Happened Between the Images). The endless stream of changing colors and geometric patterns in conjunction with the eerily repetitive theme music was hypnotic, to say the least. However, I knew I was in for a treat.

Before watching this piece, I had never really considered all the different forms of pre-cinema. Once I saw all of these different pre-cinematic gadgets, it got me interested in the evolution of moving pictures. For centuries, people must have been excited by the idea of animation; who wouldn't want the power to bring life to the seeds of creativity in your mind which had for so long lain dormant? With the power of animation, one could bring fantasy into reality, make the impossible possible.

The theme song pervaded through the entirety of the film, with slight augmentations over time. This reflected to me the constant goal behind all of the gadgets we saw in the movie- to ensnare and bewitch the audience with visual illusions in order to push the boundaries of possibility.
