Chien Andalou
My far-and-away favorite of the films we watched last Thursday was "Un Chien Andalou" by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali. It felt the most like what I had come to this class hoping to find. The film provoked my emotions -- it was gross, disturbing, irreverent, sexually charged, and comic in its absurdity. Where most of the other films to me felt like exercises in style, "Un Chien Andalou" felt assured and confident in bridging the ideas of art and film and being able to sabotage standard narrative without losing my attention. The film contained many affecting and memorable images and scenes, some of which (like the eyeball-slashing scene) haunted me long after the credits rolled. The film seems to have a particularly large influence on David Lynch, who is one of my favorite filmmakers of all time, and in particular his avant-garde film "Eraserhead" from 1977. Definitely worth checking out if you like the artistry or tone of "Un Chien Andalou," which I did.
