This film was our classes’ first, official "avant-garde" film and it definitely held up to our high expectations, with the strange political ideals strewn within the plot and awkward camera angles that create bizarre emotions throughout the action. Its unique plot and general disturbing quality added to the feeling that it was anything but normal. Yes, there was still a general story and it flowed relatively smoothly but it still felt off like there was more to it. After reading the article, it is easy to see that this piece has been (drastically) altered. But was the change for the better or the worse? In my opinion, it almost took away from the original and organic purpose that the writers had in mind. German expressionism was a strong undercurrent in the film but because they tacked on the "framing device" the idea of corrupt authority and misconstrued ideas are virtually ruined. The frame makes it Francis' story and makes him crazy taking away from Dr. Caligari/the director being corrupt. Historically I feel that the original storyline would have been able to preserve that era and later benefit our generations by informing us of the hardships they faced. Avant-garde films are so unique that this tampering seems to be more of an annoyance to an art than a preservation.
